The Fall – My Favorite Time Of Year
Cooler air has finally arrived and, I must say, I was ready for it. Pleasant days and cool nights should help bring out the fall colors in trees and bushes. The first frost in my area usually arrives between the 15th and 20th of October. It’s starting to feel like hunting season, my favorite time of year.
I previously wrote about the dangers of field fires and, I am sad to say, there have been several in my area. Over the weekend there was a big one, five miles long, southwest of Kankakee that required 40 fire departments and 15 to 20 farmers creating fire breaks to put it out. If you see one of these fires stay away from it. One of the problems fire departments have is when spectators block roads and lanes which prevent or slow down fire trucks from getting to the fire. If you get caught impeding a fire truck, there is a stiff fine for that.
Fall and winter indoor shooting leagues and competitions are now getting organized. I encourage you to find a league near you and join in the fun. I really enjoy precision shooting. Sandy Ford Junior shooters in Streator, Illinois is holding monthly international (Olympic) matches. These include air pistol, standard pistol, free pistol, center fire and sport pistol. These matches will really help you improve your marksmanship. See section “Sandy Ford’s Indoor International Pistol Event” below for more info. The first match is October 11th and the second match is November 8th. Matches run all the way until April.
If you have an indoor shooting league let me know. I will be happy to mention it.
On Thursday, October 23rd, we will begin our fall indoor air pistol practice and league. We start at 5:30pm and go until 7:30 pm. We will provide coaching, targets, Olympic quality air pistols and pellets for $5.00 a night. We will also begin the NRA marksmanship awards program for all who attend. This is designed to help shooters improve their skills. New shooters are welcome. We provide coaching. Coaching goes beyond basic instruction. Coaching requires a long-term commitment to the athlete. This is not a one and done program.
One of our shooters, who shot in the program and recently moved to Kentucky, just won 1st place overall in Women’s Precision Pistol in both the rim-fire and center-fire divisions and came in 3rd in air pistol out of 137 competitors at the NRA World Championships. The ISRA is the home of marksmanship in Illinois (and maybe Kentucky too!).

Youth Deer Season For Young Hunters Opens Soon
Youth deer season is on October 11th to 13th this year. It is open to hunters who have not reached their 18th birthday. If the young hunter does not fill their permit during the youth season, it is valid for the first regular firearm season held on November 21st to the 23rd. Young hunters must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Good Luck!
When Neda Herman of Basin, Wyoming, was 15 years old, her father took her hunting. She has had a passion for hunting ever since. Recently, Neda bagged a nice cow elk on opening day in the Big Horn mountains. It was a one shot kill. Neda and her son quartered the elk and packed the meat out. Neda is 83 years old, what’s your excuse?

Tidbits
October 10, 1845 – U.S. Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Maryland. Originally, it was known as the Naval School, but was renamed the Naval Academy in 1850. The curriculum required students to attend classes during the normal school year and develop a trade aboard ship in the summertime. This has not changed since its inception.
October 10, 1877 – The United States Army holds a formal funeral for Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer who was killed at the battle of Little Big Horn. Custer had graduated at the bottom of his class in 1861 during the Civil War. He gained a reputation of being a bold commander who was sometimes fool-hardy. Custer would be the youngest Major General in the United States Army.
October 12, 1492 – Christopher Columbus reaches the New World. He actually landed in the Bahamas and claimed the land for Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain. He was actually looking for a direct route to China and Asia and thought that he had landed in Japan.
For a long time, Columbus was given credit for discovering the New World but, actually, the Vikings had colonies in the New World in the 10th century.
October 12, 2000 – The USS Cole is attacked by terrorists. 17 sailors and 38 others were wounded in the attack. The terrorists were part of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda network.
October 13, 1775 – The Continental Congress authorizes the construction and administration of the first American Naval force. Happy birthday, United States Navy – 250 years and going strong!
October 14, 1912 – Presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt is shot in Milwaukee by a saloon keeper named John Schrank. The 32 caliber bullet was aimed directly at Roosevelt’s heart. Roosevelt’s heavy coat, glasses case and manuscript slowed the bullet.
Roosevelt pulled the bloody manuscript from his coat pocket and kept on speaking for 84 minutes with the bullet still lodged in his chest. Teddy was a tough one!
October 15, 1991 – Clarence Thomas is confirmed into the Supreme Court by a vote of 52 to 48. The battle to get Thomas confirmed was a bitter one but Thomas will become one of the leading jurists of the United States Supreme Court.
