All law-abiding gun owners are outraged and saddened by the crime perpetrated by a madman in Uvalde, Texas.  All of us should join the people of Uvalde, Texas, in grieving for the loss of innocent lives.

The shooter is undoubtedly at fault.  He is not alone.  There are those who have resisted hiring more armed resource officers for schools, refusing to allow qualified teachers and staff to be trained and carry firearms in schools, and refusing to allow active shooter drills in schools.  Also at fault are the politicians who attack law-abiding gun owners and firearms instead of providing funds to schools and requiring them to harden the schools to make them more impervious to attack.

The NRA Annual Meeting is fast approaching and the announcement of former President Donald Trump’s attendance is adding more controversy to the meeting.  There are those who think some of the people former President Trump endorsed are not perfect enough for them.  Before every election I give an admonition regarding candidates, and it is that time again.  Here it is: There are no perfect candidates.  Don’t bother to look for a perfect candidate.  I advise if you want to go on such a quest, join Diogenes for the eternal search of truth or perhaps, the search for the Holy Grail; you will have more success.

The NRA Annual Meetings will be in Dallas, Texas, on May 27,28 and 29.  There is a fight shaping up for the Executive Vice President for the NRA.  That position is presently held by Wayne LaPierre.  The challenger is LTC Allen West.  How all this will shake out, I can’t say.  Whoever gets the job is in for a rotten thankless experience.  The requirements for the job are you must have a hide as thick as an elephant, are used to working under extreme pressure, be very smart, be able to command, and willing to argue with the mainstream press which is like explaining quantum physics to a bowling ball.  We will know more the week after the Annual Meeting which is when the NRA Board meets.

Firearms Owners Identification Card (FOID) holders have started receiving notifications about their renewal from the Illinois State Police (ISP).  If you have not yet received a notice, you may get one in the future.  Don’t get excited.  These notices are going to people who have both an ICCL and FOID card.  What is happening is the ISP is combining FOID cards and ICCLS to match up expiration dates.  The purpose is to make the renewal process easier.  The ISP will extend your FOID card at no charge to match your ICCL expiration date.  Your FOID will remain active in the system.  Your new card will combine both your ICCL and FOID.  Just as a reminder, you may now apply for your FOID card 180 days in advance of the expiration date.  The application time for the ICCL remains the same at 90 days.  If you are an ISRA member, we will assist you in applying for both your FOID and ICCL applications.  If you are uncertain about the process, call us first because if things get botched up, it is a real mess.

Warm weather is gradually on the way.  I see more people at shooting ranges seeking a cure for cabin fever.  May is just around the corner and that means shooting activities at outdoor ranges will be in full swing.  For all those who belong to outdoor ranges, it is time to do spring cleaning and perhaps a little fix up.  If you belong to an outdoor range, check to see when a workday is scheduled and participate.

We are about to experience our first brush of early summer weather which is great news for all of us who love shooting outdoors.  You may see some new faces at the range, considering the number of new gun owners we have.  Remember, always be welcoming; this is new territory for them.  They may not know or understand all the rules.  They need a mentor, not a drill instructor.  Not only is this important to understand for range operators and Range Safety Officers, but individual members or patrons as well.

As most of you know, the unserialized firearm bill or “Ghost Gun bill” HB4383 Amendment #2 passed the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate and is headed for the Governor’s desk.  I have written several times about how the process works in Springfield, but I am going over it again since HB4383 Amendment #2 is such a good example.  HB4383 started out as a bill which required utilities to notify people by certified mail in an area where a high voltage electric line is proposed.  The original language was stripped out of the bill and replaced by the ghost gun language.  The title of the bill still retained the public utility language even though the bill had nothing to do with the title.  I received several calls asking why we were taking a stand on a public utility bill.  You have to look at the amendments to a bill to understand what the bill is about.  HB4383 passed about 2:30am on Saturday morning.  There were 993 witness slips opposing the bill and only a handful supporting it.

IGOLD 2022 is in the history books.  As we expected, it was smaller this year but it was still a success.  I would like to thank all the members, volunteers, staff, lobbyists, and board members who helped.  Once again IGOLD came off without a hitch.  Next year, we will once again be allowed into the Capitol barring unforeseen events.  I hope you will come if you didn’t make it this year.  One of the things that happened that made IGOLD successful was the 25 or 30 Senators and Representatives that joined us at the Lincoln Steps on the east side of the Capitol.  That is more than we have ever had by two.  It is great to see that support among the legislators.  Next year’s tentative date is April 5, 2023.  All that depends on the Legislative Calendar which will be out in mid-December.  We hope to see you there.

Winter has slipped away, Day Light Savings Time is here, and the first of April is hours away.  The outdoor shooting season has finally arrived.  The days are growing longer and warmer and acute cabin fever has set in.  Let’s get outdoors and do some shooting.

Last week, I wrote about a Quinnipiac Poll regarding people who would defend the United States and who would not defend this country should we be attacked as they have been in the Ukraine.  I was shocked at the number of “white flaggers” we have amongst us.  Many of these people are the same ones who would like to do away with the Second Amendment.  Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama signed the Alabama Constitutional Carry bill into law one hour after it passed the final vote last week. The sponsor of the bill was Representative Shane Stringer.  Representative Stringer was fired from his job as a Captain on the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department for sponsoring the bill.  The Alabama Sheriff’s Association opposed the bill so his boss fired him. Representative Stringer is a solid Second Amendment supporter who stood up for what he thought was right and took the hit for doing the right thing.  I predict a bright future for Representative Stringer.  Maybe he ought to run for sheriff.  Alabama is the 22nd state to pass constitutional carry.  Governor DeWine of Ohio signed SB215 making constitutional carry legal in Ohio, making Ohio the 23rd state with Constitutional Carry.  That leaves Indiana being the next state to most likely become part of the Constitutional Carry family.  Georgia is the next most likely after Indiana.  That would bring the total Constitutional Carry states to 25, half of the states.

The long-time leftist dream of destroying the National Rifle Association (NRA) got a setback on Thursday, March 3, 2022.  New York Attorney General Letitia James had part of her lawsuit against the NRA dismissed by New York Supreme Court Justice Joel Cohen.  James had sought to have the New York Supreme Court simply dissolve the NRA.  This part of the lawsuit was simply a political attack on the NRA and its members.  The left is always looking for ways to silence free speech if they don’t like the message.  NRA Counsel William A. Brewer III declared the ruling a victory for all those who believe in free speech and association.  The NRA still has a lot of financial hurdles ahead of it and is by no means out of the woods yet.  Bankruptcy is still a possibility but a victory is still a victory.

A friend of mine sent me a picture of a 79-year-old Ukrainian woman getting her first lesson on how to shoot an AK47 obviously in preparation of the Russian invasion of her country.  The photo stirred memories of years ago when the anti-gun crowd claimed the Second Amendment was useless when it comes to defending your homeland with armed citizens.  I do not agree with that premise nor do most Ukrainians.  My guess is that there are Russian soldiers who also might disagree with that premise.

It seems that no matter which way we look, some government somewhere is tightening the noose of government control to lessen the freedom of law-abiding citizens to make their voices heard.  Of course, I am speaking of the people’s freedoms, not the government approved freedoms we are supposed to support.  The freedom to not follow the mask mandates is the one I am speaking about, the fight against government ordered masks.  The mask mandates have become a symbol of government overreach and therefore have become the line in the sand.  Protests are popping up all over the world.  For us here in the United States, it is a battleground.  There are those who love government control right here in the United States.  They espouse the government propaganda line on masks, gun control, social justice and everything else.  These are the left-wing billionaires who support no-bail, reduced sentences, easy on criminal policies, open borders and all the rest of it that is tearing our country apart.  Much of this is supported by people like George Soros, Mark Zuckerberg and Ed Bastian of Delta Airlines.  There are others also.  The big battle is coming.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) has released a statement regarding their efforts in getting FOID cards processed.  Actually, the ISP does a good job as long as the person fills out the application correctly.  If you, or whoever helped you, made some mistake on the application you are still in the soup.  If you are an ISRA member, there are two staff members in the office who will help you.  Please do not call on Mondays or before 10am.

The online publication “The Reload” reported what we already suspected about the NRA and their financial condition. The phalanx of lawsuits launched against the NRA and Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, has hurt them badly.  Of course, the lawsuits were designed to do just that.  Legal fees now make up 20 percent of the NRA’s expenses.  The Reload sort of backhands the NRA for paying Wayne LaPierre’s legal expenses but in the real world, that is what has to be done.  LaPierre was acting on behalf of the NRA and I am glad they are backing him up.

Since the Biden Regime has taken control of the government, we have been inundated with experts who are telling us, or at least trying to tell us, what to think.  It is important to remember that these so-called experts are either employed by the government or work for a quasi-government organization that is beholden to the government for their existence.  If you remember the first few hours of the COVID-19 news, some experts disagreed with Dr. Fauci but they were rounded up and soon fell into line.  This is how all this works, in my view.  The government strategists tell the experts what their opinion will be. Then the government asks them what their opinion is and they regurgitate the government propaganda line they were told to give.  Then the President, or whoever the spokesman is, tells us to follow the science.  Winston Churchill had a great quote regarding experts and the United States: “Nothing could be more fatal for the United States than to get into the hands of experts.  Expert knowledge is limited knowledge, and unlimited ignorance of the plain man who knows where it hurts is a safe guide than any rigorous direction of a specialized character”.  You said it, Sir Winston.

I have not flown for a couple of years.  The last time I flew before this SHOT Show was in 2019.  Going out and coming back this time was even less pleasant than in 2019.  Coming back was particularly aggravating.  Sure, I had to show a photo ID every time I walked a few feet while hanging on to my phone and iPad.  When I got to the metal detector, I explained that I had four plates in my neck.  Still, the metal detector found something and I had to be wanded down.  I set that wand off so I had to be patted down.  Still nothing, so I went to pick up my shoes, watch, backpack, coat and other items in the two trays I had crammed everything onto.  One tray went one way and the other tray had gone down another way.  The tray with my backpack had to be searched.  My backpack was full of such terrorist items as pens, paper and my meds.  I learned the hard way a few years ago, if you take meds, keep them with you.  Once, my luggage went to San Francisco but I went to Washington D. C.  Not good.  After my backpack was searched and I redressed myself, I was ready to go to the gate.  I admit I muttered to myself about why I had to put up with all this crap.  I had never done anything bad.  I have a FOID card and CCL and go through background checks every night and the TSA people don’t go through any.  All that gave away to dealing with driving on the Tristate Expressway, Interstates 88, 355 and 55.  When I got to the last 30 miles, the road is a nice blacktop two lane road occupied with about 10 vehicles and a couple of rabbits.  Wonderful.  When I got home, my blood pressure had dropped to normal levels.  Then I turned on the TV to see the latest news.  It was then I learned the TSA had ruled that illegal aliens can use their arrest warrants to board airplanes.  I wondered what illegal aliens use for a photo ID, their wanted poster?  I did not check my blood pressure before going to bed.

As promised, I am at the SHOT Show.  Attendance is down about 33% and the number of exhibitors is down 25%.  Many of those who are here have cut down on the number of personnel and their displays.  This does not mean that sales are necessarily down.  It was much easier to talk to factory people and they were able to take more time with each person.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has issued a Scam Alert to those trying to purchase high demand shooting products online. There are bogus websites and offers out there for ammunition, propellants and other items.  I have received two calls from people who have been scammed so I know that this is happening.  If this happens to you, call the FBI or the ATF and report it.
