A Shooting Picnic

by Don Bekeleski

Summer is here! People all start to think, "What would I like to do that is different this year?" People try to find something new, so that they can talk about it for a long time after. They will sit around and say "Man that was really a ball, we have to do that again sometime"! I have a suggestion of how you can create such an outing, perfect for summer or fall.

Hold a shooting picnic. There may be ranges that will accommodate you or you may know of some land where you could hold such an event. This could involve whole families that have never shot, or it could involve friends, neighbors or people from work. I am sure there are a number of people you know that have never experienced the fun of shooting. Maybe the farmer where you hunt each year would let you hold the event, when you include his family in on the BBQ. Everyone brings their own food and grills. Make sure you have a safe area to shoot, with eye and ear protection for those shooting or nearby.

They do not need a FOID card as long as they are only being instructed to shoot and they would not be denied a FOID card if they applied, and the person instructing does have a current FOID card. The whole day does not have to be shooting. The main emphasis should be the BBQ, and the shooting a fun side venture. I am sure wives, daughters, sons and friends would definitely want to try the shooting if they don't have to own a gun and all that goes with it. You just tell them to step up to the batters box and you have the bat, ball, gloves and everything they need to have the fun! People who don't want to shoot can come and just enjoy the BBQ, but they may want to try it once they see it and others encourage them to do so.

Think of the people you could influence to be on the pro 2nd Amendment side once they have played the game. The first thing you have to do is find the place to do it. After that putting it together will be fun. Everyone loves a picnic where they can sit and jaw. Moms and dads will be ecstatic to see their youngster do well and hit a can or break a pigeon their first time shooting. Many women would love to try, but have never been asked. Here they could join their husband or significant other to impress the other with their skill. Think about it. Summer is just starting and you have the next few months to plan and accomplish it.

If you do hold such an event please write me and let me know how it went. Remember guns don't make us unsafe - only the government that bans them does!
