Dove Skeet Shoot

by Don Bekeleski

I know it’s kind of a weird title to the article. I named it that because that’s the name I gave to this shooting game we play at skeet once in a while. I do a lot of skeet shooting and some times it just gets to be hum drum—same thing over and over. So I put my pea pickin' brain to work and decided to come up with a variance game, using the high and low house. Most of the shooters have enjoyed it because it creates a change, which of course as you know, variety is the fun in shooting also!

You may not be able to do this on your skeet range depending on the safety issue. Our skeet range is set off by itself from the trap fields so we are able to shoot this. Check out the safety especially if your fields are in close proximity. You may have to change a couple things if so. Anyway I am going to explain it and if you can do it please try it and let me know what you thought of it.

To make this more understandable let’s set up some imaginary polar directions, so you will understand what I’m telling you. For this example let’s say the high house faces East and the low faces West. Draw this on paper with the two houses, or use the image below. Now when I give you stance directions you can relate to what I’m saying with the imaginary polar directions. This course will take 25 shots to complete, but varying amounts of shots at each station.

Station 1.  The shooter stands just west (around the corner) of the high house facing north. He calls for 3 single low houses, but does not shoot at them till they reach the high house. It would be similar to shooting birds right in front of you about ten yards away. Total-3 shots.

Station 2. Stand about 20 yds. South of the high house __even with it facing North. This is two low birds—following. You call for the first one and the second comes out behind it. This is probably a 45-yard shot.
Total—2 shots.

Station 3. Stand in an area about 6 yards out from, but between Station 2 & 3 of the actual skeet stations. Face North. For the first shot you call and it’s puller's choice—one bird. Then load two shells and call for a regular double—shoot whichever you want first. Total—3 shots.

Station 4. Walk directly East till you are in the same general area between the actual skeet stations of 5 & 6. Face Northwest. Call & you get 2 high birds –2nd one on report. Total 2 shots.

Station 5.  Stand just behind the sidewalk at the actual skeet station #5.
Face Northwest. Call for and you get two low houses 2nd one following.
Total—2 shots.

Station 6. Stand 10 yds. South of the low house—even with it.
Face Northwest. Call and get two low birds—the 2nd one on report.
Then call and get one low bird and the 2nd one on report is puller’s choice. Total—4 shots.

Station 7. Stand 5yds. east of the actual station 8. Face East. This is a very fast low house because you are very close to it. Call and get one low and one high on report. Stay facing east for the high also. You do this scenario twice. Total—4 shots.

Station 8. Stand 3 yds. East of actual station8. Face West. Call and get two high—2nd one on report. Total 2 shots.

Station 9. Stand about 5 yds. west of the actual station 8. Face East. Hold gun at port arms. Call and get one low and a high on report. Finish of with one high still facing east at port arms. Total—3 shots.

You can draw this on paper or print this page, or just use the image below.
My friends and I have had a lot of laughs with this. If you shoot it, let me know what you thought of it.
